In January 2012 the construction crew will begin construction on Apodoca Park. Gone will be the famous 1970"s orange and green racetrack structure that Las Crucens have grown accustomed to. The replacement will be three more sections of bleachers comparable to what the Vaqueros had last season. The project must be ready for March 15th which is City of Las Cruces Deadline for the High Schools. 2012 will mark the final year that the Las Cruces Public School District will play at Apodoca Park. Currently, the Las Cruces Public School District is in final process of building their own baseball complex near the field of dreams set to open in 2013. This will leave the Vaqueros as the only tenant of Apodoca Park. The City of Las Cruces has also completely redone the playing surface. The infield was completely regraded, the mound was removed and the grass has been overseeded. Other visible improvements will be an extended on deck circle with field turf. Also included is a warning track that extends further into the field of play to allow better grass coverage. The homeplate will have the Petco Park San Diego Padres look with a homeplate cutout as opposed to a tradition circle. This look had been applied in 2008 and 2009. Phillip Flores, Mark Johnston and Rudy Trevino are the leaders of the project and it has Vaqueros fans as excited as ever. They will have the best facility in the league and seating for around 750. The Las Cruces Vaqueros released th

The Las Cruces Vaqueros released their new look for 2012 season. The Vaqueros will don Royal Blue Jerseys with Gold Numbers and white letters. The Vaqueros will also wear solid Royal Blue Hats. The Vaqueros Jerseys will include sponsor patches from The Land of Enchantment, IHOP, Dr Shelley Eye Center, The Pecos League and the Las Cruces Sun News. The Vaqueros will finally goto Grey Pants on the road for the 2012 season. It is time to get with the rest of the baseball world, the Vaqueros exclusively worn Powder and White in their first two seasons.

Gone are the Powder Blue Jerseys and pinwheel hats. The Vaqueros might wear powder blue pants in special event dates.

Fans got to voice their opinion in a recent article in the Las Cruces Sun News and on the Vaqueros Facebook Page. We would like to thank our fans as we received a large number of responses.

The Vaqueros are excited and looking forward to getting the season started.

2011 Season recap Las Cruces Vaquer

2011 Season recap Las Cruces Vaqueros-For the 2nd year in the row the Las Cruces Vaqueros had alot of bright spots but ended the season on a low note. Las Cruces entered the Pecos League as one of two charter cities along with the Alpine Cowboys. The Vaqueros got hammered in an exhibition game with the Diablos 21-10 despite leading 6-5 in the game. Las Cruces ran off to a first place start but it was deceiving 8 of their wins were against Carlsbad. The Vaqueros swept Alpine in Alpine and looked in the drivers seat after June 7th. They had a 3 game lead. Then things got odd for the Vaqueros they played Ruidoso eight games in a row where they swept Ruidoso in Las Cruces 4 games and lost all 4 games in Ruidoso. After this the wheels began to fall off the wagon. White Sands swept three games from Las Cruces including a real close 19-18 game. Then the Vaqueros lost two more games to Carlsbad in a row at home. Alpine swept Las Cruces in Las Cruces. Las Cruces finished out July on a see-saw note winning and losing games. The Vaqueros clearly had the best offense in the league. The attendence was so bad it forced the team to reduce salaries in half, the Vaqueros were averaging nearly 1/3 of the fans from the 2010 season. The limited grandstand seating was the primary problem. There was no where to sit. The Vaqueros season come down to a 4 game series with Alpine, they had to win the series and they split the series heads up. Alpine had a 1-1/2 game lead entering the final series. Las Cruces would have had to sweep Roswell to get help. Luckily for the Vaqueros the Roswell Invaders were going to rest their entire staff for the playoffs and the Vaqueros swept the first three games. Roswell re-injected their starters for the 4th and deciding game and beat Las Cruces 12-1. Ending the Vaqueros season and allowing Alpine to advance to the playoffs. The Vaqueros were the only salaried team not to make the playoffs. The Vaqueros continued to send their best players to the United League/North American League and it left the team with no depth when it mattered. The Vaqueros choose to send their key players up to higher leagues before the trade deadline (Sean Keeler, Clint Stroud, Kyle Boggio, Steve Detweiller and Gerardo Caceres). The Vaqueros had no payroll and no depth behind these players and were at major disadvantage.

The Vaqueros had a great offensive team if not the best offensive team in the Pecos League

Clint Stroud joined the team May 29 after being released from the Frontier League and hit 15 home runs and .365 average, he was the best offensive player in the Pecos League
Harry Williams hit .368 and was with the team from start to finish with .368 average
Henry Fuentes hit 13 home runs and almost made El Paso"s team in Spring Training.
colt Loehrs hit .429 in the last 11 games of the season
Rob Hermann hit .368 and was the teams catcher
Mitch Saum was hurt but hit three home runs in a game and would have had a great season.
Luis Carreras was by far the teams best starter, he threw 60 innings with a 5.40 ERA. He gave the team a quality start every outing.
Sean Keeler was a major spark plug when he was with the Vaqueros he kept going back and forth from the Frontier League to the American Association to the United League, he somehow was around long enough to throw 32.2 innings

The Vaqueros were every free agents choice when coming to the Pecos League, with best playing surface in league and best city. However alot of players were unhappy with the way the team was ran.

Negatives
Too many to list-The Vaqueros had more problems then positives. Fans were cautious to jump into the Pecos League after the CBL had ended the season two weeks early. But all problems stemmed from almost no community support and attendence. The Vaqueros attempted to hire local Mayfield Coach Miguel Gomez to help garner community support. But the fans didn"t come at all. The biggest attendence was the firefighters community game where there were close to 350 fans. 2010 General Manager Holly McWatters made numerous false promises to the business community and local fans and cost the Vaqueros badly in sponsorship and at the gate. The Vaqueros were doomed from day 1. Holly was removed in the middle of the 2010 season after she attempted to take the Vaqueros to join the United League in the middle of the season. Local businesses told the Vaqueros they were very unhappy with an El Paso Staff running a Las Cruces Team. The majority of the 2010 sponsors did not renew. Several of the checks the Vaqueros did get from sponsors were NSF. Miguel Gomez and his staff did the best they could with the resources they had. Even with very little travel in the Pecos League there was no financial support for the Vaqueros and something had to give. The salary of the players was what was slashed. It was uphill with salary problems from players. The organization of the team was the major problem, no one knew who was doing what. The Vaqueros weren"t sure they were going to be able to play until almost May 1 due to the Grandstand Problems. The Vaqueros were involved in several fights, their players continued to charge out of the dugout without any control. Their scorekeeper and head statiscian got into a fight with Ruidoso Osos manager Kevin Griffin. Team owner Andrew Dunn quickly recognized there was a problem when 89 people showed up for a home game with the Diablos.

Positives
Las Cruces made it through the season in a much more stable league and they have an entire off season with a good general manager and sales staff to prepare for the 2012 season. The grandstands are also going to expanded to triple the capacity of 2012 and ready by March 15th. Clint Stroud had a great year, Steve Detweiller got called up to the Can-Am League. Several other players got called up to other leagues. The Vaqueros Golf Tournament was a huge success. The Vaqueros found out who their die hard fans were. Miguel Salcedo taking over team operations was by far the best move the team made. The Vaqueros are committing the City of Las Cruces for five years with the money the City of Las Cruces has put into Apodoca Park the upside the Vaqueros could be the best team in the Pecos League or the worst only time will tell.

The Vaqueros are abandoning their Baby Blue Look for Royal Blue. Casey Dill is their new manager and will be building team from ground up. The City of Las Cruces is in process of rebuilding the grandstands at Apodoca Park. 2012 will be a statement year for the fans in Las Cruces. The Vaqueros operation is coming together nicely for the 2012 season and they have no where to go but up. The Pecos League will be more competitive but if the biggest city in the Pecos League can just match the attendence of Roswell and Alamogordo then the Vaqueros will live in the top of the standings.

The Las Cruces Vaqueros got their 2nd victory of the 2011 season both in walk off fashion against the White Sands Pupfish. Steven "Caveman" Lemmon was brought into the 9th inning to try and hold a 8-8 tie. The Vaqueros scored in the bottom of the 9th to win the game, Andy Watson started for Las Cruces pitching 5 innings allowing 6 runs. The Las Cruces Vaqueros hosted the El Paso Diablos Monday Night at Apodoca Park in a game that several local fans had dreamed of seeing...This dream became a reality when the Diablos agreed to play two exhibition games with the Pecos League at Cohen Stadium. After Roswell played the Diablos on Wed Night the Diablos had to reschedule their game with the Vaqueros to Monday Night in Las Cruces. The surface was beautiful and the Vaqueros had a 10-5 lead in the 6th inning. Juan Martinez homered and many players hit well. The Vaqueros made 14 errors which gave them no chance to win the game, and the Diablos scored 9 runs in the 7th inning.

The Las Cruces Vaqueros began their 2nd season at Apodoca Park on Monday Morning. Head Coach Miguel Gomez had 20 players report on Monday and another set of 20 players will report on Tuesday. Pitching Coach Efrain Lara was excited to be in camp. The Vaqueros only brought 2 returners into camp Brandon Kelly and Mitch Saum. Apdocoa Park will by the premier surface in the Pecos League. The Vaqueros will wear their same powder blue jerseys with white pants and pinwheel hats. Gone are the powder blue pants. Players reported from as close as El Paso but the majority of players were from Florida. The Vaqueros Spring Training opener is against the El Paso Diablos on May 8th.

Team Preview Las Cruces Vaqueros- 2011 will mark the 2nd year the city of Las Cruces will host the a professional team in Apodoca Park. The City of Las Cruces has been hit especially hard by economic times but the support of the community for the Vaqueros remains.

Large Changes for the Vaqueros include the following

Miguel Gomez, Jeff Banegas and Effrain Lada will serve as Vaqueros coaches for the 2011 season. Gone is coaches Bobby Brown/Sean Kramer-Bobby will return to Alaska, Sean is pitching coach for San Angelo.
Gone are the powder blue pants. The team will wear white pants exclusively.
Gone is the Continental Baseball League, the team now plays in the New Mexico based Pecos League. The Continental League will always be the league that finally brought baseball to Las Cruces, but in the end it was very unstable with two travel teams and basically Las Cruces and Alpine knowing it was a two team league.
Gone are the majority of players from 2010 season, the Vaqueros better players were picked up by higher leagues throughout the course of 2010 season. Brandon Kelly, Mitch Saum and Steve Detweiller are the only three Vaqueros coming to camp off of the 2010 team. Coach Gomez and the Vaqueros staff did not want to be saddled with prior committments to players from 2010 season. So the Vaqueros have signed a very good team for 2011 season with new players.
Gone are the Desert Valley Mountain Lions and Coastal Kingfish- in are the White Sands Pupfish, Roswell Invaders and Ruidoso Osos.
Gone is the El Paso Based General management staff from 2010 season. After receiving numerous complaints from fans, city leaders and the community the Vaqueros listened. The Vaqueros local management staff will be 100% Las Cruces Based and much more receptive to interaction with local businesses. The Continental League/El Paso based staff did not represent the Vaqueros properly in the Las Cruces Market with team operations or with promotions. The new Las Cruces Staff led by Claudia Castillo, Jeff Banegas, and Alyssa Gintant is much more professional, responsive and accessible than the 2010 staff.
Gone is the famed grandstand at Apodoca Park, deemed structurally unsound by structural engineers in August the City of Las Cruces has hustled and got things together in time for the start of the Vaqueros season, despite major shortages financially in City of Las Cruces Budget

As the season approaches the number

As the season approaches the number one concern in the Pecos League has been the condition of Apodoca Park Grandstands. On 4/13/2011 the replacement grandstands were finally put into place. The grandstands are 6 rows deep but provide seating for close to 350 people. This gives Las Cruces Season Ticket holders a huge sign of relief. Due to limited seating for the 2011 season the season ticket holders will be given priority seating. The City of Las Cruces has been working days, nights and weekends to get this facility ready for the Vaqueros. The Vaqueros begin Spring Training at Apodoca Park on May 2nd before opening the exhibition season down I-10 against the Diablos at Cohen Stadium. Fans are invited to check out the Vaqueros in Spring Training. Vaqueros Operations Director Claudia Castillo says "Seeing the grandstands is a relief, it assures fans our season is getting off on the right foot". It will also boost season ticket sales as the Vaqueros fans know the park will be ready for opening day.

It"s not UTEP/NMSU but it might be

It"s not UTEP/NMSU but it might be the next best thing for Las Cruces Fans. The El Paso Diablos invited the Las Cruces Vaqueros for two spring training game on May 8 in Cohen Stadium in El Paso. The Vaqueros salary structure is 1/4 of the Diablos but the game will still be competitive in 2010 the Vaqueros played the San Angelo Colts to a 1 run game in both ends of a doubleheader. For El Paso who opens with the Kansas City T-Bones on May 12th it will be about finding the best available local opponent that they can find. The Diablos have historically scrimmaged El Paso Community College due to lack of options. The Diablos are in process of building a very solid team behind new manager Jorge Alvarez. Fans are encouraged to wear powder blue in support of the Vaqueros.
